Knowing different methods to procure water is a very important skill in survival situations. In fact, there are many ways in which an individual can find water, whether you are in a forest or desert.

The best place to start looking for water is on the surface. Sources of surface water include lakes, rivers, and streams.

Running water like streams and springs are usually found in isolated areas at higher altitudes and are normally safe to consume. However, be wary of water that melts from glaciers and ice as it contains bacteria in abundance. If you find yourself in a completely unfamiliar region and the water’s quality seems questionable, take measures to purify the water (discussed below). Take no risks.
